Deepfakes vs The Swifties

2024 is without doubt going to be an interesting year for seeing how the impact of deep fakes, the ability to generate them, and detect them evolves. Sadly we have the combined forces of USA Elections, global conflict, and celebrity fake nudes.

None of these are new, they have existed for decades. Certainly the first fake nudes of celebrities goes back decades, as does fabricated images, voice impersonations. They have always been a problem, they are now though easier than ever to produce, and have a greater level of fidelity.

This year we have already seen, fake politician robo calls, faked war images and appeals for cash, faked nudes of Taylor Swift. Of all the things that caused X to take action, it was Taylor Swift, even then it took 17 hours to remove the content, which was approximately 17 hours too late.

Whilst detection is a necessary need, and the technology to do the detecting. Ultimately this is going to come down to legislation and legal action. The economic cost of being prosecuted for doing them, promoting them and allowing them to be on the social platforms needs to outweigh the economic gains. Social and AI platforms and services need to be economically held accountable, in the style of GDPR.

Here are a couple of useful resources on how openAI is approaching the challenge of the election, and a guide to its free AI Moderation API.
