ChatGPT vs Claude

Anthropics Claude.ai has been the underdog, well sort of, for the last year. It has always had better context windows (in effect local working memory), probably better company ethos around security, ethics and impact but a less performant or flexible model.

That started to change with the Version 3, Opus, which pushed past chatGPT4, and 3.5 Sonnet now beats Chatgpt-4o (the current), on several benchmarks and some interesting features. Before we do a deep dive on Claude, lets just check a few features. I have a subscription to both, so I wont be considering the free versions. Seriously, if you are reading a newsletter on AI…. you know.

The Headline differences on features

OpenAI has the GPT ‘store’, a vast library of publicly provided ‘GPT’s’ (preset custom instructions) which may at some point be monetised. It’s mainly junk.

Using GPT’s to store your personal ‘playbook’ of prebuilt repeated tasks is the best use of these ‘bots’, Claude has the equivalent called ‘projects’.

ChatGPT can by default browse the web, create and run python code (within limits), and create images using Dall-e. By comparison Claude does not browse the web, produce images or run code. Although it can write it (and better than chatGPT), you need to be able to execute it outside of the standard user chat interface.

Tone of voice

I personally tend to find Claude default tone of voice more professional, balanced and nuanced in tone. Chatgpt seems to be leaning into sensationalist, emoji, instagram ready phrasing. Maybe it is #LivingItsBestLife?

Either way with a little prompt engineering you can have which ever writing style you would like, trained on your own, or pirate… the choice is endless

Usage Limitations

As of time of writing, the usage limits on 3.5 Sonet, are tight. It is a barrier to productivity, no doubt that will improve. The more usage available vs 3.0 Opus model (on the drop down list) is still highly capable, and as good at general content creation as chatGPT4o
